R-S Central girls advance in 3A state tourney
The R-S Central High School girl's basketball team had four players score in double-figures en route to a 68-58 road win over Fred T. Foard in the first round of the 3A state basketball playoffs Monday night in Hickory.
The Hilltoppers (17-10) were led by Alyssia Watkins' 26 points to couple with Tia Bristol's 17 and Te'ja Twitty's 11. Aalyiah Davis added 10 points and Taylor Miller had four in the win.
"It was big," said Darius Fuller, R-S head coach.
R-S Central also dominated rebounding, picking up 38 total rebounds —20 offensive and 18 defensive — in the effort.
"We controlled the boards and limited them to just one shot," Fuller said. "We also had some very key offensive rebounds that really helped."
The Hilltoppers jumped out early and held on to a four-point advantage for most of the first half. That lead held into the halftime locker room as R-S led 30-26.
Down the stretch, R-S Central knocked down free-throws — shooting 28-of-40 on the night.
"Our free-throws were unbelievable tonight," Fuller said. "That was another big key for us."
R-S Central will move into the second round where they will likely stay on the road on Wednesday night.
