Ruffin Tanner’s journey as R-S Central’s head soccer coach officially began Friday night as he met with perspective players and their parents.

Tanner had the opportunity to introduce himself to his new Hilltoppers while learning some new faces.

Tanner handed out 20-page packets to all in attendance that chronicled his journey to his new position and outlined his plans for the program. All of his hopes begin with offseason activities.

“I firmly believe in creating a year-round culture of player development within the R-S Central soccer program,” Tanner stated in his packet. “Programs do not get better if the players on the team only put in work during the season; the offseason is when and where players distinguish and separate themselves as individuals and as a team from opponents.”

Although the team isn’t allowed to hold official try-outs until Aug.1, Tanner has already purchased new Hilltopper soccer shirts to be distributed to those who validate their commitment during the offseason.

After the opening four pages of the extensive packet, the final 15 pages are dedicated to fitness expectations, drills and practice plans.

“The standards of fitness, speed and strength are very high in competitive soccer, and thus, I will expect players to work on these areas year-round,” Tanner said. “The best players and teams are the ones that are willing to work harder, longer and faster than any of their opponents.”
