It was a quick night in Rutherfordton on Thursday as R-S Central's Connor Dailey pitched a complete-game allowing just three hits to give the Hilltoppers a 3-1 victory over the visiting East Rutherford Cavaliers.

Dailey struck out 10 batters, including the final two of the game, in a matchup that lasted just 90 minutes without allowing an earned run.

"Connor is our guy and that's no secret," R-S Central head coach Chadd Fowler said. "He was able to throw his three pitches for strikes and was able to attack the zone."

"They got the three runs and we just one. We just came up a little short," East Rutherford head coach Bobby Reynolds said. "We just need to score one more run than the other team."

Both teams had relative difficulties at the plate as R-S Central only mustered five hits in the game, two each from Brent McCollum and Dailey and one from Dustin McEntire.

East Rutherford's lone run came in the first inning after Dailey hit Tripp Hamrick with a pitch to start the game. Hamrick moved to third on a pair of sacrifices and eventually scored on a passed ball.

Central (6-4, 3-4 SMAC) had a chance to break the game open early with no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom half of the frame, but Lance Greene grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to stifle the threat. however, Joel McDaniel did score from third on the play to the game.

McEntire followed with a strikeout that should have ended the inning, but the ball shot past East Rutherford (5-4, 3-3 SMAC) catcher Jordan Strickland allowing McEntire to make it to first and McCollum to score from third.

Dailey helped his own cause in the second inning leading off with a base hit and then scoring from second on a throwing error by Strikland to put R-S Central up 3-1.

Dailey allowed just two hits the rest of the way to earn the victory.

Cameron Hodge was tabbed with the loss after pitching five innings and giving up just one earned run and four hits.

"I hope this gives us some momentum," Fowler said. "Every win is big and hopefully we're still getting better each night out."

R-S Central travels to Burns on Tuesday while East Rutherford hosts Chase that same night. Both games are set to start at 7 p.m.
