Lady Trojans outlast Thomas Jefferson
CHERRYVILLE — After both teams lost in the first round of the Bud Black/Dennis Tate Holiday Classic at Cherryville High School, Chase and Thomas Jefferson faced-off early Friday morning. The Lady Trojans prevailed 48-23.
"We didn't play too bad today," Chase head coach Todd Davis said about the win. "We got two wins to start the year and struggled since, so it's good to get another win."
Kendra Holcombe led the Lady Trojans with 20 points while Kaitlyn Smart added 14.
Chase takes on Castlewood at 1 p.m. in the final day of the tournament.
Lady Hilltoppers fall to South Forsyth
CHEROKEE — The Lady Hilltoppers got up early on South Forsyth Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the Holidays on the Hardwood Tournament at Cherokee High School, but the wheels fell off after the first quarter as they eventually lost 62-48.
"Foul trouble killed us in the middle of the game," Central head coach Darius Fuller said after the game. "Te'ja Twitty and Tia Bristol sat most of the second and third quarters and we just couldn't recover. They were really good and sometimes all you can do when you run into a buzzsaw is get cut.
Alyssia Watkins led the Lady Hilltoppers with 15 points and Bristol added 11.
Central finishes up the tournament today at 4 p.m. against the loser of Erwin/Cherokee.
Hilltoppers eliminated by East Burke
MORGANTON — Despite 25 points from Rashaun Whitesides, R-S Central basketball fell to East Burke in the semifinals of the Burke County Holiday Classic by a final of 81-64.
"We executed and played well but East Burke just outplayed us," said Central Head coach Greg Wright. "They shot really well and made a lot of contested shots, there just isn't much you can do about that."
Jaylen Hollis added 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds while Jay Blanton contributed nine points and nine assists.
Central plays the loser of Freedom/McDowell tonihgt at 5:30 p.m. to close out the tournament.
