Owls announce 2012 summer schedule
Even in the midst of a contract consideration from a former Major Leaguer to be an assistant coach, the Forest City Owls have managed to release their 2013 summer baseball schedule.
May 28, 2013 will mark the beginning of the Owls’ sixth season in Forest City.
And the release of the schedule comes on the heels of the summer baseball team making an offer to former Atlanta Braves’ third-baseman Chipper Jones to be an assistant coach on the squad.
The Owls will open the 2013 season on May 28 at McNair Field against Thomasville.
Along with the popular daily traditions, Forest City will also host its first Independence Day celebration on July 4 when they host the Martinsville Mustangs. Forest City General Manager Jeremy Boler said that the team will have two additional fireworks shows — on Friday, May 31 and Saturday, Aug. 3.
“This is a great schedule for our fans, with 10 weekend games and lots of nights of our favorite weekday promotions,” Boler said, in a release. “For the first time, we will be hosting 32 games this season. That’s the most we have ever hosted during the regular season.”
Much like last season, the Coastal Plain League will be split into an East and West division, with seven teams in each.
The East will consist of the Edenton Steamers, Fayetteville SwampDogs, Morehead City Marlins, Peninsula Pilots, Petersburg Generals, Wilmington Sharks and Wilson Tobs. Along with Forest City, the West will comprise of the Asheboro Copperheads, Gastonia Grizzlies, Martinsville Mustangs, Thomasville HiToms, CPL 2012 Petitt Cup champions the Columbia Blowfish and the Florence RedWolves.
While each team will play a 56-game schedule, the majority of games will be within the division but, much like 2012, there will be inter-divisional play. The first half and second half of the season will each consist of 28 games.
