Nadolski and Barkell dubbed as CPL All-Stars
The Forest City Owls failed to claim the Western Division crown for the first half of the Coastal Plain League season, but they did come on strong in the final few weeks before the break and landed two players on the West Division All-Star team, OF Matt Nadolski and 1B/DH Ty Barkell.
"Both of these guys have faced some of the best pitchers in the league and performed well," Owls head coach David Tufo said. "It's nice to have those guys in the middle of our lineup as we go into the second half of the season."
Nadolski is currently fifth in the CPL batting .351 with 26 hits and 11 RBIs. What makes his numbers more impressive is that he struggled mightily at the start of the season and still leads the team with 25 strikeouts.
"Matt is someone that has been steadfast for us. He's maintained consistency despite starting off slow," Tufo said. "Once he got his legs under him he really turned it on ... He's been a real staple in the middle of our lineup."
Nadolski spends most of his time in right field but has made some spot appearances on the rubber for the Owls as well.
"Matt's even thrown some guys out from the outfield and come on the mound for us a few times this year and helped out," Tufo said. "He was voted on his offensive skills but the fact that he's helped us out in every way is huge for us."
Barkell has been the Owls' most reliable player all season playing in 27 games and starting 26 at either first base or as the DH.
In those games he's racked up a team-high 104 at-bats and 30 hits, which also leads the team. Nadolski is the next closest to those numbers with 74 and 26 respectively.
"When we weren't hitting well as a team at the start of the season he was the one giving us solid at-bats," Tufo said.
Barkell is steadily becoming the face of the 2013 Owls.
"He's been someone that I'm confident putting him in the lineup and in pressure situations he's the one I want up there," Tufo said. "He should be highly respected throughout the league."
The 2013 CPL All-Star Game will be July 8 in Hampton, Va. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
