The Forest City Owls fell in a big hole, fought back to take the lead, but lost that lead late, falling to the Columbia Blowfish in the first game of a seven inning double header 8-6 Friday night at McNair Field.

The loss drops the Owls to 20-15 and spoiled homeruns by Devin Wenzel and Bradley Jones in the fifth inning.

The visiting Blowfish wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as second place hitter took the first pitch he saw from Anders Deshields over the right field wall for a solo homerun and a 1-0 lead.

The Owls struck back in the bottom of the second with a two out rally.  Jones, Zach Cerbo and Matt Dezort each singled with Dezort collecting the RBI to tie the game.

Columbia appeared to break the game open in the third when Erik Barber hit a bases loaded triple to score three runs. Shortstop Joey Hawkins overthrew third base allowing Barber to score, making the tally 5-1.

The Owls roared back in the fifth as Forest City put on a power display.  Wenzel led off the inning, crushing his fourth  homer of the season. After Joey Hawkins singled, Jones followed with his homer of the year, also to left field which cut the deficit to 5-4. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Steven Pallares gave Forest City their first lead of the game with a two run double, making  the tally 6-5.

But the Owls could not hold that lead. Reliever Brock Goodling entered the game in the sixth inning and was wild . After a RBI tied the game, Goodling walked in the go-ahead run before he could escape the inning.

The Blowfish added an insurance run in the seventh to account for the 8-6 final.

Forest City does not return home until Thursday when they face rival Gastonia.
