It may have been a chilly night in Rutherfordton, but the R-S Central bats were red-hot as they put a 16-0 beating on the Bessemer City Yellow Jackets Friday night.

“Games like this are few and far between,” Central head coach Chadd Fowler said after the win. “We got some pitches early and drove them in the gap.”

Central starter, Dustin McEntire, made quick work of the Yellow Jackets in the first inning and the Hilltoppers took advantage in the botton half of the frame.

Conner Daily led off with a deep double to centerfield and Joel McDaniel drove him in a two batters later with an RBI single.

McDaniel came around to score two batters later when McEntire ripped a sharp ground that the Bessemer City third baseman couldn’t handle. Central finished the inning with an early 2-0 lead.

The Hilltoppers exploded in the second inning with 13 runs.

The Hilltoppers loaded the bases with no outs and took it from there.

After one run walked in, McDaniel reached base on a deep fly to right that bounced off the fielders glove scoring Garen Murray and Brent McCollum to go up 5-0.

Two wild pitches plated Daily and McDaniel and a McEntire single brought in Lance Green for an 8-0 lead.

Then with the bases loaded, Murray came back to the dish and scored Dylan Gallman and Alex Owens to extend the lead to 10-0.

McCollum came back to the plate and laced a triple into left-center on the very next pitch to score Owens and Murray for a 12-0 advantage.

Central scored three more runs before Bessemer City recorded three outs.

“We got some momentum early and just jumped on them,” Fowler said.

Owens scored the final run for Central in third inning after knocking a lead-off double.

Central finished off the Yellow Jackets in five innings.

“We think we’ll be a team about pitching and defense but we think we’ll still score some runs,” Fowler said of the offensive explosion. “The future will tell what our identity will be.”

McEntire recorded the win for Central and also went 2-4 at the plate with a pair of RBIs.

Central returns to the diamond Tuesday at North Gaston. First pith is scheduled for 7 p.m.
