Blunders on the bases doom TJCA

The Thomas Jefferson Gryphons fell to the Polk County Wolverines 3-0 at McNair Field on Friday night as questionable base running proved too difficult to overcome.

The Gryphons reached base early and often but failed to capitalize as they were picked off at home plate three times on the night.

The Gryphons placed three men on base in the bottom of the first with hits by Mason Martin, Caleb Bishop and Mac Martin but were picked off trying to steal home twice to end the threat.

“We ran the bases bad. We got thrown out at the plate three times.” TJCA head coach Chris White commented after the game. “We pride ourselves in being able to run the bases well. We work on that probably more than anybody. Maybe a little too aggressive trying to push too many runs across early. I'll take the blame for that.”

Polk scored their first run in the second on an RBI single by JC Suddeth that scored Dylan Turner from third.

They put up another run in the third on an RBI single from Alex Philpot to extend the lead to 2-0.

Polk scored again in the fourth on a TJCA throwing error that allowed Dylan Turner to come home for the 3-0 lead.

The Gryphons poor base running spoiled another solid outing by pitcher Caleb Bishop who struck out 11 batters.

“He's done a great job for us. I think he's 7-2 for on the year. He's usually in double digits in strike outs.” White said.

The Gryphons are 11-6 on the year and poised to make a run in the playoffs.

“Right now we are in the No. 2 spot in our conference for the 1A and hopefully we will stay right there. We got a couple of tough games coming up,” White said.
