Aiken captures SMAC 3A title

He had to outplay a teammate, but R-S Central’s R.J. Aiken won the 3A singles crown at this week’s SMAC tennis tournament.

After moving through his first two matches on Tuesday, Aiken faced-off against fellow Hilltopper Michael Hensley in the championship round.

Aiken won the match 6-4, 2-6 and 7-6 by virtue of a 7-4 tiebreaker.

Both Aiken and hensley will compete in the 3A Western Regional Tournament Friday at Jackson Park in Hendersonville.

East Rutherford’s Mason Jolley and Landon Holtsclaw also qulified for 2A Western Regional Tournament as a doubles team after finishing second in the conference earlier this week.

Jolley and Holtsclaw will open play Friday, May 3 at Newton-Conover.
