Hilltoppers set for Burke County tourney
It's another year and another Christmas tournament for the R-S Central boy's basketball team.
This season they're set to travel to Freedom High where they face TC Roberson High School in the first round of the Burke County Christmas Invitational.
"I really don't know a lot about TC Roberson," said Central head coach Greg Wright. "I know they're methodical and like to run a half-court set to keep the game low-scoring. They slow it down and are really patient with the half-court sets."
The Hilltoppers (7-4; 1-1 SMAC) are a transition team that feeds off of steal and fast break points.
"It's basically the same thing for us, we have to focus on what we can do and what we do well to use that to our advantage," said Wright. "Hopefully our defensive pressure will speed the game up and we can get to a pace that benefits us."
Defensively, Wright will look to point guard Desmond Whitesides to apply the pressure.
"Desmond doesn't get the notoriety at point guard because he doesnt score a lot of points," said Wright. "To me he is extremely key in what we do because he puts a lot of pressure defensively on the other team and gets a lot of steals that jump start our transition game."
Unlike the other Whitesides on the Hilltopper roster, Rashaun, who has scored in double figures in 10 of Central's 11 games, Desmond is more of a defensive presence with sneaky scoring ability.
"He really is the key that makes us go," said Wright. "I look to him to keep improving and helping us. He can really shot the ball but needs to be more confident with his shot."
Central squares off with TC Roberson Thursday, Dec. 27. Tipoff time is yet to be announced.
