Senior Kaitlyn Smart kept the Trojans competitive for most of the night, but when she was relegated to the bench, Shelby began to pull away.

“Foul trouble really hurt us tonight,” said Chase coach Todd Davis. “I felt we had the game under control and were in a good spot to win until Kaitlyn fouled out. We just have to learn to close out games.”

Chase opened the game in a zone trap and it resulted in an immediate Kendra Holcombe steal and layup. The teams then began a long  streatch of trading baskets as the open four minutes of game action featured four lead changes.

Chase began to mount a comeback out of the locker room. Behind an aggressive trap which caused numerous turnovers. Holcombe was the direct beneficiary of these miscues scoring six points. By the time she canned a pulled to within one point at 34-33.

Chase appeared to take a lead on its next possession, but Smart’s layup was waved off and she was whistled for an offensive foul instead. With Smart on the bench with her fourth foul, Shelby once again finished the frame with a flurry of points and led 40-33 going into the fourth quarter.

In that fourth quarter, the teams traded baskets until Coleman hit a big three to put Shelby up 46-36 at the 4:18 mark. Smart then picked up her fifth foul and Chase could get no closer the rest of the way.
