Cavaliers fall on the road to West Lincoln
A solid season came to a close for East Rutherford baseball Friday night at West Lincoln with a 5-3 loss in a third-round match-up in the NCHSAA 2A state playoffs.
The Cavaliers struck early as Jordan Strickland carried over his hot streak from earlier in the week with an RBI single in the first inning.
West Lincoln's Cameron High matched Strickland's feat in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI single of his own scoring Chandler Jenkins.
Luckily for East (17-10) and starter Brandon Wellmon, one run was all the Rebels managed as they stranded three runners in the inning.
West Lincoln (24-5) added two runs in the second inning highlighted by a Brett Huff RBI triple to right field as Wellmon continued to struggle in the early going.
Wellmon settled in on the mound and helped his case at the plate in the top of the fifth.
Wellmon followed a John Padgett single with a base hit of his own to put runners on first and second with one out. Logan Hawkins followed suit with a single to clear the bases.
Wellmon regressed in the fifth inning walking two batters with a passed ball sandwiched in-between before head coach Bobby Reynolds made the switch to Brock Helton.
West Lincoln's Cody Dellinger made the Cavs pay with an RBI fielder's choice to retake the lead, 4-3.
Helton overcame a fielding error and escaped the inning before the Rebels could do more damage.
West Lincoln added one more in the sixth on a wild pitch and Chandler Jenkins retired the Cavalier in order in the seventh to seal the win for the Rebels.
Huff led the Rebels with a double and a triple while Hawkins led the charge for East going 2-for-2.
