Lady Hilltoppers bitten by Burns, 2-0
The Burns Bulldogs defeated the RS-Central Hilltoppers 2-0 in a hard-fought defensive struggle Thursday.
Burns (9-1) opened the match as the more aggressive team applying constant pressure on goalie Morgan Gilreath and the Hilltoppers (2-5) defense. Gilreath turned away numerous scoring threats before the match settled into a midfield battle.
The defensively minded Hilltoppers were unable to generate anything offensively in the first half with only one shot on goal.
“We probably overplayed defense today but if you could watch the way they pass... we're not going to see anybody better then them. Gilreath did a phenomenal job,” Central head coach Scott Rumfelt said after the loss.
Burns finally broke through on a Rekyla Briscoe shot that slipped passed Gilreath for a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute for the only score of the half.
The Hilltoppers put together a much more aggressive second half behind the effort of team captain Emily McLaughlin and Leah King. The offense mounted several scoring opportunities but failed to capitalize against the tough Burns defense.
“We knew we weren't going to get many chances but we like McLaughlin one-on-one against anybody in the state," Rumfelt said.
Unselfish play and crisp passing led to the second goal of the day for Burns in the 48th minute as McKenzie Wright caught the corner of the net for the final goal of the match.
“We have improved this week," Rumfelt said. "I look forward to the second half of the season.”
Central returns to action Thursday, April 11 for a 5:30 p.m. match at East Rutherford.
