The Shelby softball team came into Henrietta Wednesday with a perfect 7-0 record and ranked 10th in the state according to a MaxPreps.com poll. Not anymore.

Behind a strong day by Dakota Reid at the plate and in the circle, Chase scrapped out a 4-2 win over the Golden Lions in a crucial 2A SMAC contest. The win marks the third in a row for the Lady Trojans after beginning the season 0-2.

“We are starting to find our identity now,” said coach Daniel Bailey. “We can’t just outhit people like we did last year. We have to fight and scrap for everything we get. The girls have really bought into that and it has helped to turn our season around.”

After Dakota Reid sat Shelby down in order in the top of the first, she helped her own cause in the bottom half by roping a double to the centerfield wall. Ashley Hardin followed with a single down the left field line to put Chase (3-2, 3-1 SMAC) up 1-0.

The Lady Trojans got out of a major jam in the second. After Shelby put the first two runners own, Hardin gunned down a runner trying to steal and Reid recorded a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.

Both sides settled down in the next two innings with only hit being a Reid double but she was erased on a double play to leave the tally at 1-0 in favor of the Trojans.

Chase threatened to add to their lead in the fourth as Erika Dover led off with a single and Avery Wilson followed with a walk. Kaitlyn Smart struck out, however while sharp liners by Kayla Crowe and Miranda Loving found the glove of Shelby fielders to keep the home team off the scoreboard.

After Shelby tied the score in the fifth with an unearned run, Reid reached on a one-out single. Devyn Gowan followed with a double and Hardin brought Reid home with a sharp single while Dover followed with a RBI single to push the  lead to 3-1.

Chase added an insurance run in the sixth. Ashley Brown led off with a hustle double and scored on a single by Gowan to push the lead to 4-1.

Reid worked around a leadoff single in the seventh, retiring the next three batters she faced, the last coming via strikeout, to put the finishing on the complete game win.

Reid finished the day by going a perfect 3-3 on the day with two doubles, while striking out six Shelby batters from the circle.

Chase returns to action as they host Freedom on March 28. First pitch is set for 4:30 pm.
