Toppers fall at Draughn

The R-S Central football team will have nightmares about a pair of plays that happened three yards or fewer from the south end zone at Draughn on Friday night that led to a 28-20 Hilltoppers setback in South Mountain 2A/3A Conference play.

In a 7-7 game late in the opening quarter, Central (1-3, 0-2 SMAC) fumbled the ball at the 1-yard line, losing what turned out to be its final chance to take a lead against the host Wildcats (1-4, 1-1) in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Then after the second Jay’len Hollis touchdown pass of the second half drew the Hilltoppers within 21-20 behind with 8:48 to play in the contest, Draughn’s Donnie Patton lunged to block the extra-point try of Ryan Hill.

Draughn then marched 70 yards on 13 plays — all runs — and chewed up nearly seven minutes of fourth-quarter clock for the game’s final points, a 1-yard TD plunge by fullback Adam Estep.

Central’s last chance from its own 41 was thwarted via a pass for no gain and three straight incompletions, after which the Wildcats took a knee twice to seal the win.

The first Hilltopper score came on the game’s second play from scrimmage, when a Dominique Patterson fumble turned into a 35-yard defensive TD by Desmond Whitesides. After Draughn tied it 7-7 on a 5-yard run by Gavin Morton (14 carries, 88 yards), Patterson (14 carries, game-high 104 yards) atoned for his team’s lone turnover with a

57-yard scoring run, the Wildcats’ longest play from scrimmage all season.

Hollis (6 for 13, 140 yards) completed TD passes of 27 yards to Whitesides on third-and-9 and 20 yards to Malik Whetstone on fourth-and-11 sandwiched around an Alex Monroe 41-yard TD pass from Coy Lambert to keep Central close throughout.

Matt Atchley led the Hilltoppers with 85 rushing yards on 11 attempts while Whitesides added 67 rushing yards and 53 receiving yards.

Central hosts Crest, a 44-34 winner at T.C. Roberson on Friday, next week.
