GWU softball takes two in Wilmington
The Gardner-Webb softball team pounded out 24 hits on Sunday en route to a 9-5 win over Morehead State and a 4-2 victory over UNC Wilmington at the weather shortened Seahawk Classic at Boseman Field in Wilmington.
The two wins push GWU to 2-4 overall on the season and gives the Runnin’ Bulldogs its first winning streak of the 2013 season.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs used a three-run sixth, as well as a three-run seventh to defeat the Eagles of Morehead State 9-5 on Sunday morning.
Gardner-Webb registered a season-high 13 hits and took advantage of three Morehead State errors to push across a season-high nine runs in the win.
For the first time all season, Gardner-Webb got on the scoreboard first as back-to-back one-out walks to sophomore Kellie Beres and redshirt-junior Morgan Baker helped lead to a two-out RBI single to left field off the bat of designated player Elizabeth Williams to put the visiting team up 1-0 in the first.
In game 2, Gardner-Webb tallied 11 hits, all of which were singles, and rode the right arm of Ashley Rhyne who held the Seahawks to only four hits en route to a 4-2 road win in the Runnin’ Bulldogs second game of the day on Sunday.
GWU gets back on the road for the War Eagle Classic, hosted by Auburn University March 1-3.
