GWU tennis loses in Big South tourney
No. 1 seed Charleston Southern defeated No. 8 seed Gardner-Webb, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference Women's Tennis Championship Wednesday afternoon at Gardner-Webb University. The Buccaneers advance to the semifinals for the second-consecutive year and 12th time in school history.
“We had some really competitive matches going on and they were just better than us today,” said GWU head coach Jim Corn, in a release. “I am real proud of my girls they fought and were very competitive in a lot of the matches.”
Charleston Southern earned the doubles point at No. 3 and No. 1. On court three,Nicolin Luecke and Marketa Placha defeated Mary Walker Mixon and Teodora Stanciu, 8-1, and on court one, Yvonne Hubler and Alexandra Walters downed Yasmin Doost and Ronia Hutterli, 8-6.
CSU clinched the match on court No. 2 when Hubler knocked off Jenny Lunde, 6-2, 6-2. The Bucs added wins at No. 1, Marketa Placha over Yasmin Doost, 6-1, 6-1 and at No. 4, Nicolin Luecke defeating Valeriia Popko, 6-1, 6-2.
The Buccaneers (16-3) move on to Thursday’s semifinals while the Runnin’ Bulldogs end their season with a 10-13 overall record.
