Gardner-Webb pair earn national honors

Two Gardner-Webb football players earned national honors following the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ 55-7 win over Point (Ga.) Saturday.

Kicker Jordan Day and tight end Mike Estes earned College Football Performance Awards, announced by press release Monday.

Day, a fifth-year senior and converted soccer player, was an honorable mention FCS Performer of the Week selection at punter.

Against the Skyhawks, Day had three punts for a career-best 47 yards per attempt and a 46.4-yard net average. His first punt of the night went for 55 yards.

Day also hit a pair of field goals and all seven of is point-after-attempts for a career-high 13 points in the game.

Estes — playing in place of injured All-Big South Conference tight end Seth Cranfill — was also named honorable mention FCS Performer of the Week.

Estes had three receptions for a career-high 50 yards, with two of those catches going for first down. On the season, Estes leads Gardner-Webb tight ends with seven receptions for 104 yards.

The No. 25 Runnin’ Bulldogs will open a two-game road swing this week with a trip to Charlotte to face the 49ers at Jerry Richardson Stadium. The game will be televised on WCCB.
