GWU women tumble against Winthrop

Gardner-Webb junior center Catrina Green posted 21 points and 16 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season, however, it wasn’t enough at Winthrop junior guard Dequesha McClanahan poured in a game-high 23 points to lead the Lady Eagles past the Runnin’ Bulldogs 60-55 on Saturday afternoon in Boiling Springs, N.C.

The loss, which is GWU’s fifth straight, drops the Runnin’ Bulldogs to 7-10 overall and 0-6 in the Big South, while with the win Winthrop moves to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Behind Green’s 21 points and 16 rebounds was sophomore forward Jessica Heilig with 10 points and freshman forward Olivia Parker with nine points and 13 rebounds, tying her career-high. Sophomore guard Mayhana Dunovant dished out a team-high six assists, while junior guard Jasmine Dale drained a three-pointer for the 10th straight game in the loss.  Green also swatted a game-high five blocks, matching her career-high.

For Winthrop, behind McClanahan’s game-high 23 points and seven assists was center Schaquilla Nunn with 12 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks, while shooter Diana Choibekova added 11 points in the win.

The Lady Eagles outscored Gardner-Webb, who held a 19-10 advantage in second chance points, 23-5 in points off turnovers and 16-0 infast break points over the 40-minute contest.
