GWU’s Tyrell Nelson named Big South Freshman of the Week
Gardner-Webb forward/center Tyrell Nelson was named Big South Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday, as selected by the league office.
Nelson (Charlotte, N.C. / Metrolina Christian) earned the award for the second time this season. He was also named Freshman of the Week on Dec. 2.
The 6-foot-7, 230-pound standout was a monster in two games for the Runnin’ Bulldogs last week, averaging 18.5 points, 15.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals per game – helping GWU to a 1-1 record in a pair of tight games.
On Wednesday night in the league-record four overtime duel with VMI, Nelson scored a career-high 24 points and pulled down a Big South-record 25 rebounds in a 108-104 loss. He made a career-best 8-of-9 from the free throw line and pulled down 11 of his rebounds on the offensive end – helping GWU post 30 offensive rebounds in the game.
Nelson’s rebounding total narrowly missed the Gardner-Webb school-record of 26, which was set by Hall of Famer George Adams on Feb. 9, 1970 against Warren Wilson College.
Nelson then scored 13 points, pulled down six rebounds and blocked a career-high three shots to help Gardner-Webb to an 80-76 win over North Division co-leader High Point on Saturday night. He added a pair of steals in that victory.
Nelson is averaging a solid 9.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game this season – and has bumped those averages to 10.3 points and 7.3 rebounds in Big South games.
