McLaughlin leads Hilltoppers past East
The R-S Central Lady Hilltoppers soccer team looked impressive Tuesday as they defeated their cross-town rivals East Rutherford 7-0 at home.
The Hilltoppers took command as Emily McLauglin began what would be a constant assault on the East goal.
A sharp pass from McLaughlin to Taylor Williamson led to the Hilltoppers first goal with just 1:45 off the clock.
McLaughlin followed that with a goal of her own at the 33-minute mark to make it 2-0. It took just four minutes to score her second goal of the game on a long strike that sailed over the outstretched arms of the Cavaliers goalie.
Emily Wilson got into the scoring action with a free kick that hit the post but ricocheted off of the East goalie and rolled in.
A second goal by Wilson pushed the lead to 5-0 and the first half scoring was capped by McLaughlin’s third goal of the game giving Central a 6-0 halftime lead.
“We got after them pretty hard tonight,” Coach Rumfelt said after the game, “Everybody got to play a lot tonight.”
The Cavaliers first shot on goal didn’t come until the the 35-minute mark of the second half. “Leah King and Emily Wilson really controlled the middle tonight and that don’t show up as much,” stated Rumfelt.
The second half was more competitive as Justine Greene took over at goalie for the Cavaliers. Her aggressive play turned away a handful of shots by the Hilltoppers until Freshman Karsyn Kearns sailed one in just under the cross beam to finish the scoring at 7-0.
“She’ll stay in the goal. She catches everything that comes at her,” East head coach Neil VanDyke said of Greene’s performance,
“To go from six (points in the first half) to one in the second, I was impressed,” VanDyke said after the match.
East will be in action next on Friday at 5 p.m. as the travel to Cherryville.
The Hilltoppers will visit Chase Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. start time.
