Lady Cavaliers topple Central
In a game meant to played at East Rutherford but moved to Rutherfordton due to poor field conditions, the Lady Cavs (3-2) didn’t miss a beat routing R-S Central on the road, 15-1, Tuesday night.
As dominant as their bats were, the East Rutherford glove work was the story of the night.
“It was a great offensive night for us but our defense was the story,” Powell said. “We’ve been battling some errors and tonight we just had one. That was huge for us.”
The Lady Cavs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first before Klinnin Carson took the circle.
With two outs in the bottom half of the second, Carson was hit by a liner in the left hand, her pitching hand. She shook it off, threw a few warm-up pitches and finished the inning untouched.
In the third, Carson helped her own cause and took advantage of two Hilltopper errors by knocking in a run with a double to centerfield making the score 4-0. East tacked on three more runs in the frame for a 7-0 lead.
Carson continued to mow her way through the Central lineup allowing East to capitalize on another Central error in the fourth to go up 8-0.
Makayla Crawford scored the only Hilltopper run leading off with a triple into right field and then taking home on a wild pitch three batters later.
East added one run in the sixth and six more in the seventh to account for the 15-1 final.
Carson finished the night with five strikeouts from the circle and went 2-4 at the plate.
Savannah Davis led the charge for East with four hits while Leeanna Briscoe and Raven Gray had three hits apiece.
“We’ve got a good group of kids to build a real team concept with and that’s really coming together,” Powell said.
East returns to action today against McDowell at home while Central travels to Brevard on Thursday. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
