Cherry, DeVoe headline AP all-state teams for NC
West Craven's Jamie Cherry and Shelby's Gabe DeVoe are unanimous picks to the 2013-14 Associated Press all-state prep basketball teams for North Carolina.
The two Atlantic Coast Conference recruits were selected on all 25 ballots from sports writers across the state in results released Wednesday.
Cherry, a UNC signee, made the women's team for a fourth straight time and finished as the No. 2 scorer in state history with 3,210 points. The 5-foot-6 senior point guard averaged 33.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.2 steals.
DeVoe, a Clemson signee, made the men's team for the second straight season. The 6-4 senior guard averaged a state-best 34 points to go with 10.4 rebounds.
Both Cherry and DeVoe were Parade all-Americans.
There were seven senior returnees to the 12-player AP all-state men's and women's teams, led by three-time selections Paris Kea of Greensboro Page and Madi Story of Catawba Bandys on the women's side. The other women's returnee was reigning AP state player of the year Jatarie White of Charlotte Providence Day, a South Carolina recruit.
Kea, a Vanderbilt recruit, and Charlotte Myers Park junior Rydeiah Rogers each had 22 votes as the second-leading vote-getters on the women's side, followed by Duke recruit Azura Stevens of Cary with 21 votes.
Rounding out the women's team are: East Rutherford senior Rachel Camp, Albemarle senior Akela Branch, Kinston senior Brittany Drumgoole, West Forsyth senior Jazmine Jones, Goldsboro Rosewood sophomore Lexi Mercer and Hickory junior Danasia Witherspoon.
On the men's side, Clayton's Gary Clark and Eastern Alamance's Lamont Robinson made the team for the second straight year.
Clark, a Cincinnati recruit, and Kinston junior Brandon Ingram were tied for second with 24 votes, followed by North Forsyth senior Kedrick Flomo, Pinetown Northside sophomore Edrice Adebayo and High Point Wesleyan Christian senior Theo Pinson — a North Carolina signee and McDonald's All-American.
Rounding out the men's team are: Lake Norman junior Kishawn Pritchett, Fayetteville Trinity Christian sophomore Dennis Smith Jr., Charlotte Northside Christian senior Keyshawn Woods, McDowell County senior Raekwon Miller and Elizabeth City Northeastern senior Aaron Carver.
Sports writers at AP member newspapers nominated players for all-state consideration, then voted for nominees to select the teams.
The AP prep basketball coaches of the year for North Carolina will be released Thursday. The players of the year will be released Friday.
