Eight county grapplers head to state tournment
Chase’s Josh Stephens used four straight falls to win the 145-pound division of the 2A West wrestling regional Saturday.
The championship earned Stephens another trip to the 2013 2A State Wrestling tournament this weekend in Greensboro. Eight Rutherford County wrestlers earned trips to the state tournaments at the Greensboro Coliseum beginning Thursday.
Stephens capped his final regional tournament with a fall over Dan Avis of Newton Conover at the 3 minute, 39 second mark of the championship bout. Stephens reached the finals with a 21-6 technical fall win over Logan Quiney of Bunker Hill.
East Rutherford’s Cody Hall finished second in the 132-pound division of the 2A regional tournament at West Lincoln.
Hall went through the first two rounds winning by fall and defeated Cody Dobbins of Bunker Hill by a 4-0 decision in the semi-finals.
At 285 pounds, Chase’s Richard Sharek finished third after defeating Ah-Ron Hope of Newton Conover, 1-0 in the consolation championship.
After falling in the first match of the tournament, Sharek won five straight matches on the consolation side to finish third overall.
Chase’s Lance Johnson won his first two matches at 126 pounds before being defeated in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, Johnson defeated Christian Giles of Draughn, 5-2 before losing to East Lincoln’s James Daniel, 7-6 in the consolation championship to finish fourth overall.
Nathan Daisley, of East Rutherford, won his first-round match at 152 pounds with a fall over Brandon Johnson of North Henderson. After losing in the second round, Daisley won three straight matches in the consolation bracket to make it to the finals where he lost to Matt Tamari of Owen.
Chase finished 10th as a team with 68.5 points while East Rutherford was 16th with 36 points. Newton Conover amassed 215 points to lead the team totals.
In the 3A West regionals at North Gaston, R-S Central’s Colin Cope took the No. 7 seed at 132 pounds and transformed that into a second-place finish.
Cope picked up a pair of pins and a second-round decision before falling to Ben Pitts of Fred T. Foard, 18-9 in the championship.
At 113 pounds, R-S Central’s Caleb Cox parlayed a first-round bye into a fourth-place finish at the regional tournament.
Following his bye, Cox defeated top-seeded Cody Patton, of Patton, 6-3. He was defeated in the semifinals and dropped to the consolation bracket where he defeated Blake Jackson of Charlotte Catholic, 10-2. Cox finished fourth after being defeated by Raekwan Armstrong of Ashbrook, 7-2 in the consolation finals.
Both Cope and Cox earned trips to the 3A state tournament.
The Hilltoppers finished ninth out of 24 teams at the regional tournament.
A the 1A regional tournament at Hendersonville, Thomas Jefferson’s Will McCraw earned the top seed at 182 pounds. He picked up two wins on pins to open the tournament before falling to Mitchell’s Tanner Buchanan in the championship semifinals. Buchanan would eventually win the weight class with a default win in the championship.
In the consolation bracket, McCraw defeated Joshua Kirby of West Wilkes, 13-4 and finished third — earning a state bid — after defeating Malachi Beaver of Murphy, 6-3 in the consolation championship.
As a team, Thomas Jefferson finished with 21 points, tying the with Elkin and placing them 20th out of 26 teams.
