Lady Toppers rally past Crest

RUTHERFORDTON — After falling behind by two goals in the early going, R-S Central girls’ soccer scored four unanswered goals to beat Crest, 4-2, Tuesday night at home.

Alina Chavez scored the first goal for the Lady Hilltoppers before Emily McLaughlin took over for the home team.

McLaughlin tied the game with the second R-S Central (2-3, 2-1 SMAC) goal of the night before assisting on the final two goal to Taylor Williamson and Emily Wilson.

The Lady Hilltoppers return to the pitch on Friday at North Buncombe.

Girls’ Soccer

TJCA 0, WCAA 0

The Lady Gryphons and Lady Trailblazers battled to a scoreless draw Tuesday night in Avondale.

The draw gives TJCA  (0-2-1) their first result of the young season.

“It was a very physical game without much offense obviously,” said TJCA head coach Brian Espinoza. “I’m proud of the way the team played.”

TJCA will travel to WCAA Tuesday for their next match.

Softball

Highland Tech 13, TJCA 2

The Lady Gryphons softball team came back down to earth Tuesday as they dropped their conference opener to Highland Tech, 13-2, at Crowe Park.

An eight run third inning proved to be the difference as the Gryphons fall to 2-1, 0-1 SPC

TJCA will look to rebound Thursday as they travel to Bessemer City.

Draughn 9, Chase 3

The Chase softball team committed five errors in a 9-3 loss to Draughn Tuesday.

“Draughn is a good softball team and you can’t make that many mistakes against them and expect to  win,” said Chase head coach Daniel Bailey. “We pitched well enough to win and we hit well enough to win, but we got to take defense more seriously.”

Chase (0-1) will take to the field again today as they travel to Shelby  for a make-up game. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

Baseball

Chase 4, Draughn 1

The Chase Trojans picked up their first conference win of the season Tuesday night, defeating Draughn 4-1. The victory moves Chase back to the .500 mark (2-2 1-1 SMAC) They look to continue their winning ways Thursday as they travel to Crest.

Highland Tech 12, TJCA 3

The Gryphons  (2-2, 0-1 SPC ) fell to the Rams, 12-3, Tuesday night at McNair Field. They return to the diamond Thursday night as they visit Bessemer City.

Trojans golf finishes second at opening conference match

SHELBY — The South Mountain Athletic Conference (SMAC) opened conference play on Monday at the Deer Brook Golf Club in Shelby. Shelby won the round with a combined score of 309 while Chase finished second with a score of 357.

Jordan O’Rourke led the Trojans with an 86 while Morgan Deck scored an 88.

East Rutherford was a close third at 362 edging R-S Central’s 364 while East Burke (375) and Draughn (390) rounded out the field.
