Hawkins’ propels Cavs into second round

It was tie game heading into the top of the sixth inning Thursday night as East Rutherford battled Pisgah in the first round of the NCHSAA baseball playoffs. But after singles from Brandon Wellmon and Tripp Hamrick loaded the bases, Logan Hawkins blasted one out of the park for the go-ahead grand slam and an 8-4 lead.

The Cavs never looked back as they moved on to the second round with a 10-5 win on the road.

Brock Helton earned the win in relief after Wellmon tossed the first three innings of the contest.

Asdie from Hawkins’ grand slam, Will Randall had a solid night with three hits including a home run. Wellmon and Hamrick also had three hits on the night.

The Cavaliers move on to face the winner of the tonight’s Polk County and Bunker Hill match-up .
