15 3-pointers propel Cavs past Chase

Chase took an early 2-0 lead on East Rutherford Tuesday night at home but that would be their only lead of the night in a 87-46 loss to the Cavaliers.

"I knew exactly what we were facing," Chase head coach Jessen said after the loss. "That is a really good team right there and they'll beat a lot of teams."

"We relaxed tonight and made 15 3's," East head coach Brad Levine said after the win. "When you relax thigs come a little easier and shots fall."

A Steven Holland jumper put Chase (8-6, 2-4 SMAC) on top just 30 seconds into the game but a Roddric Ross 3 erased the Trojan lead for good.

Two 3-point shots from Travis Waldroup-Rodriguez extended the Cavs (12-4, 5-1 SMAC) lead to 11-6 and a Benjamin Beckett three-point play the old-fashioned way put East up 16-8 with 2:01 left in the first quarter.

East carried a 23-8 lead into the second quarter where their defense locked down even tighter on the Trojans.

Back-to-back 3's from Jarvis Hopper and Waldroup-Rodriguez highlighted a second quarter where the Cavs outscored Chase 19-4 to head into the half up 42-12.

"We just had too many turnovers in the first half," Jessen said. "We just got rattled and they hit some big shots on us."

The Trojan offense awakened slightly in the third quarter but the 3's just kept falling for the Cavaliers.

Ross and Hopper continued to find the bottom of the net from long distance and extended the Cavalier lead to 69-25 heading into the final quarter.

Ross kept the shooting display going in the final quarter with back-to-back 3's as the East lead ballooned to 79-33 with 4:45 left in the game.

Chase's Shad Blanton put on a display of his own with a handful of deep 3's but it was to little too late as the final buzzer rang throughout the gym giving East the 87-46 win.

"We take every game with the same attitude," Levine said following the win. "We didn't play any harder tonight than we did last week against Shelby, we just made some shots, that was the difference."

Ross led all scorers led all scorers with 23 points including seven 3-pointers.

"[Ross] shot lights out tonight," Levine said. "When we have everyone shooting like that we are a real good basketball team."

Hopper and Waldroup-Rodriguez added 17 for East while Devonte Boykins netted 10 and T.J. Watkins came one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebonds.

Blanton had 16 to lead the Trojans and Tarrio Young added 12.

Chase travels to Patton Friday night while the Cavaliers travel to country rival R-S Central. Tips are set for 7:30 p.m.
