Cavaliers fall to Rufus King in opening round

Dec. 27, 2012 @ 08:16 AM

East Rutherford shot a solid 40 percent from 3-point range but couldn’t get the final one to fall as Roddric Ross’ 3-pointer at the buzzer was off target and East fell 51-48 to the Generals from Rufus King (WI) in the first round of the Beach Ball Classic at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

Neither team shot impressively from the field as East (9-2) was 38.6 percent and Rufus King (7-0) shot 34.7 percent, but the boys from Wisconsin out-rebounded the Cavaliers 42-28, including 16-5 on the offensive glass.

“They were a much more physical team,” said East Rutherford head Coach Brad Levine. “Early in the game they had us spaced out and we got out rebounded by 14 rebounds. That hasn’t happened all year.”

East held an early 11-6 lead with 7:25 left in the first half, but the Generals exploded on a 20-5 run to end the half with a 26-16 advantage.

“They just out-huslted us in the first half,” Levine said about a physical first half where Rufus King scored 14 points in the paint. “It was the way the referees let the game play and they played into it and we didn’t. We didn’t toughen up. We just couldn’t penetrate in the first half. Whenever we would drive they would get a hand on it and we’d have to kick it back out. We’re not used to that. “

The Generals shot a poor 56.5 percent (13-23) from the free throw line but the Cavs shot an even worse 36.4 percent (4-11).

“That’s not going to get it done but the free throws didn’t change the course of the game. There were several times when we were going to the basket and nothing was called,” Levine said of the officiating. “That’s not a complaint but thats how it is. That’s part of it and if you don’t adjust you get beat.”

The Cavs stepped up the pace in the second half and trailed by just six with 2:25 left in the came. Travis Waldroup-Rodriguez then scored the next six points of the game including a 3-pointer of the backboard to tie the score at 46-46 with 48 seconds remaining.

The Cavalier defense forced a turnover on the inbound and Devonte Boykins drove to the basket, made a layup that appeared to give East a two-point lead but Boykins was called on a charging foul.

“Neither one of the defenders were set,” Levine said of the foul call. “Devonte split them and the guy turned sideways. We could have taken the lead right there.”

From there it was a game of fouls and free throws. King went 5-6 from the stripe down the stretch and East hit both of their shots, but it came down to Ross 3 that missed wide-left as the clock expired.

“We play the whole game like we did the second half and we might win that game,” Levine said of his team’s effort. “We just have to play with the intensity we had in the second half. We’re playing with those lulls where we play one half really well and another we get smacked around a little bit.”

Waldroup-Rodriquez led the Cavaliers 14 points while Ross added eight points to go along with nine boards.

Rufus King’s Austin Mitchell-Malone led all scorers with 19 points.

The Cavaliers, playing in their fist Beach Ball Classic, will play Saint James (S.C.) at 5:15 p.m. Thursday as part of the consolation bracket after the Sharks’ 70-43 loss to Bishop O’Connell (VA).

“My guys certainly aren’t happy. You can’t accept not winning a ball game. At the same time I feel like they’re doing okay. I think we all know what we need to do tomorrow.,” Levine said after the loss. “We need to win this game tomorrow. We came down here to play. We didn’t come down here to get beat three times and come home.”

Levine seemed pretty sure about his teams chances against the Sharks of Saint James (7-3).

“If we play St. James that’s a game we should come out and win,” Levine said. “If we do win we’re back to 1-1 and we go from there.”
