Camp commits to Virginia Tech
East Rutherford’s most prolific female basketball player in program history, Rachel Camp, will take her talents to the ACC in 2014.
The Cavaliers guard who has already well over 2,000 points in her high school career — with her senior season upcoming — verbally committed to Virginia Tech last weekend during an unofficial visit to Blacksburg, Va.
“When I went down there I just felt a vibe,” Camp said about the visit. “I got a chance to play with the girls and I just felt like I could fit in.”
Virginia Tech’s top two scorers are both seniors this upcoming season opening for the door for a prolific scorer like Camp who averaged 31.5 points per game in 2012-13.
“The coaches said they knew I could score and I could be a good replacement,” Camp said.
“They’re looking for someone to fill that void and they think Rachel is the girl that can do it,” East Rutherford girl’s basketball head coach Larry Ross added. “I knew all along that she could play on this level. She can go out there and score consistently on anyone you put in front of her.”
Camp was also considering offers from the likes of East Carolina, Furman and Gardner-Webb, but the chance to play ACC hoops was too much to pass up.
“It’s always been my dream to play in the ACC,” Camp said. “I had the opportunity and I didn’t want to give it up.”
