Chargers stampede East

Not much went right for East Rutherford Wednesday night as they dropped a conference showdown to the visiting Crest Chargers, 10-5.

The Cavaliers managed just five hits on the night, committed three errors and struggled to find consistency on the mound.

“Crest doubled us in runs (10-5), they doubled us in hits (12-5) and we tripled them in errors (3-1),” East Rutherford head coach Bobby Reynolds said. “You have to win two out of three facets of the game and we totally lost all three of them.”

Crest (7-1, 6-0 SMAC) jumped ahead early after the first two batters of the game for the Chargers reached base and scored on an Elijah Spurling double to right-center field.

Then Spurling scored when AJ Simmons misplayed a fly ball by Chase Halbert to right field allowing Spurling to give Crest an early 3-0 advantage against East Rutherford starter, Marcus Ledford.

Ledord lasted just that one inning as Kaleb Green replaced him on the mound to start the second.

Green worked a 1-2-3 second inning, but Crests’ Ben Canipe touched him up in the third inning with a two-run home run to stretch the Chargers’ lead to 5-0.

The Cavs (5-3, 3-2 SMAC) cut into the lead in the bottom half of the third when John Padgett scored from second on a bothced 6-4-3 double play by Crest, then scored again in the fourth inning when a pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Reese Oliver scored James Hunt to reduce the deficit to 5-2.

Crest responded with two runs in the top of the fifth but left the bases loaded against reliever Dylan Cromer.

Chase Jenkins went deep in the fifth inning for a solo shot to put East within 7-3 and a two-RBI double by Tripp Hamrick in the sixth inning match a two-run inning by the Chargers, but Crest added an insurance run in the seventh and shut down the Cavaliers in order in the final inning to seal the win.

“It really felt like it was even worse than 10-5. It felt like it had to be 15-5,” Reynolds said.

Hamrick led East Rutherford with two hits and two RBIs while Bradley Keller led Crest with four hits. Spurling finished the night with two hits and three RBIs.

Matt Bridges earned the win for Crest pitching four innings and allowing just one hit while Cromer was tabbed with the loss for the Cavaliers as Reynolds threw a total of four pitchers in the loss.

“We’re struggling finding [a pitcher] after our No. 1 guy (Cameron Hodge) and we haven’t had to do that that because we’ve either been rained out the last three weeks or been able to open with him,” Reynolds said. “This is really the first week we’ve been in this situation.”

East Rutherford hits the road Thursday for a game at county rival R-S Central. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m in Rutherfordton.

“We’re 3-2 in the conference and we’ll see what’s up [Thursday] night,” Reynolds said.
