East Rutherford wrestling followed up their solid 1-1 showing at Saturday’s Hilltopper Classic with another 1-1 record at Crest High Thursday night where they battled Crest and Shelby.

The Cavs met the Chargers on the mats to start their night and managed just 18 points in a 59-18 loss.

“We came out pretty cold against Crest in the first match,” said East Rutherford coach Tim Bird. “We fought hard, but fell short.”

East had to recover quickly since they were set to wrestle Shelby immediately after the conclusion of their match with Crest.

The Cavs regrouped but fell in a quick 18-6 hole against the Golden Lions. However, East stormed back to outscore Shelby 46-6 the remainder of the way to capture a convincing 52-24 win.

“I’m really impressed with how we wrestled against Shelby in the second match,” Bird expressed. “We came out ready to fight and I’m really proud of our guys getting that good win.”

It was a team effort on the part of East as 8 of their 11 wrestlers recorded at least one win on the night.

Our upperclassmen really came through for us to help us get some points against Crest, and our younger guys helped us to win against Shelby,” Bird said. “In order for us to win team matches, our younger guys have to win for us, and they did so tonight.”

Even with the recent success, Bird knows his team still has plenty of room to improve.

“Some of the things we need to improve on are we need to learn how to wrestle more offensively and have more aggression on the mat,” said Bird.

Cody Hall, Andy VanDyke, Nathan Daisley and Andre Gabriel all finished the night 2-0 while Chase Lovelace, Brock Collins, CJ Walker and Jake Melton each recorded one win.
