Lady Bulldogs lose a thriller to Coastal
The Gardner-Webb Lady Bulldogs nearly erased a nine point deficit in the final two minutes, but two game tying three point attempts by Mayhana Dunovant and Doreen Richardson came up short as GWU fell 65-62 to Coastal Carolina in their conference opener.
“You never like to lose,” said coach Rick Reeves. “But we played hard and will be a better team this season because of the game today.”

While GWU (4-3, 0-1 BSC) dominated the post, CCU did the same in midrange game.
By the time D.J. Hunter got a friendly roll on a foul line jumper, the visitors led 17-13. From that point the scoring slowed for both teams, but Dunovant did drill a three pointer to pull the Lady Bulldogs to within 19-18 with 6:25 remaining in the half
The squads then went on a long stretch of trading baskets GWU tied the game twice in the later stages of the half, on baskets by Heilig and Candace Brown.
Alex Puckett answered with a deep three for Coastal as they led 29-28 at the break.
CCU’s AJ Jordan opened the second with five straight points.
Heilig brought GWU back by driving the ball to the rim. When she knocked down a pair of foul shots, GWU had pulled to within a single point at 35-34.
CCU went on a 10-0 run that was broken on a Jasmine Dale foul shot and a Green rebound and putback. Megan Pittman answered with a three and the GWU deficit remained at ten points until the ten minute mark. The Lady Bulldogs exploded on a 7-1 run to pull to 49-45 with 8:16 left in the game.
The deficit grew to six points on a Jordan floater in the lane to make the tally 55-49.
Shatia Cole then canned a shot from beyond the arc as the visitors lead grew to nine points.
GWU made up some ground from the foul line, hitting five out of seven shots to pull within 58-54.
Cole delivered the dagger with another deep three as the deficit went back to seven points.
The Lady Bulldogs would not go away as Olivia Parker converted a layup to bring her team to 65-62 with 13 seconds left. GWU stole the inbounds pass to set up the game’s frenetic final moments.
