Post 423 set for Area IV playoffs

Jul. 03, 2013 @ 05:25 AM

Rutherford County Post 423 went into the last weekend of the season with its playoff hopes on the line. Three straight wins in three days over Haywood, Burke County and Cherryville sealed their spot in the Area IV playoffs with a 6-10 record.

“We’ve swung it well lately and we’re getting hot at the right time,” Post 423 head coach Sam Hooper said. “That’s the thing about Legion ball is if you catch fire at the right time you never know what could happen.

“All year we’ve been telling them that we’re due. We stayed as positive as we could and hopefully that’s what’s happening now.”

Tonight the postseason journey begins for Post 423 as they travel to South Point High School for a first-round match-up with the Gaston Braves as the No. 7 seed out of the West.

“When we were 3-10 we said we needed to play our best baseball and now would be a good time to start,” Hooper said. “We’re starting to click and guys are getting hot. Hopefully this carries over.”

With such a short season, it took 423 a while to figure out the holes in its roster, but now with the playoffs here Hooper feels he has it all figured out.

“You mix the lineups up early. That’s Legion ball,” Hooper said. “A couple guys really came on late and earned their spots that we were still back and forth with.’

As hot as the bats were for 423 in the late going, pitching made a huge improvement. Hooper hopes to see that improvement continue as he sends TJ Fincher out against the Braves tonight and Dylan Parris in Game 2 at R-S Central High School.

“We’ve been getting some good starting pitching as of late and we’ll need more,” Hooper said. “A needed day off is nice but we have to be ready to go Wednesday night.”
