The Daily Courier is proud to reveal the 2012 All-County team. The team is comprised of 11 of Rutherford County’s top performers from the 2012 season.

This exclusive group was chosen based upon season statistics and personal observations by The Daily Courier’s sports department.

Mac Martin QB/S, Thomas Jefferson: 1,390 yards passing, 9 TDs. 1,033 yards rushing, 18 TDs. 69 total tackles, 7 interceptions.

Head coach Jerry Cash on Martin: “Mac is just a tremendous athlete. His mental maturity gave us the best chance to win and he gave us all he had, even with a broken hand the final two games of the season. He may not be a quarterback at the next level but he certainly has plenty of options”

Will McCraw RB/LB, Thomas Jefferson: 782 yards rushing, 5.21 yards per carry, 5 touchdowns. 86 total tackles.

Cash on McCraw: “Pound-for-pound Will is probably the toughest kid I’ve ever coached. He was certainly our go-to guy. He’s shorter, low to the ground and runs with great balance.”

Efrim Borders WR, Thomas Jefferson: 54 receptions, 756 yards receiving, 5 touchdowns. 2 kick return TDs.

Cash on Borders: “Luckily we’ll have Efrim back next year. He can hurt you in so many ways. Efrim is one of the finest young men I’ve had the opportunity to coach; he’s incredibly unselfish. If he scores he’s happy. If some one else scores he’s just as happy.”

DeVante Austin RB, R-S Central: 1,084 yards rushing, 7.9 yards per carry, 10 TDs.

Head coach Mike Cheek on Austin: “When you have a player like Austin with that type of speed, he can take the ball to the house at anytime. Other teams knew he was going to be the one to watch but he stayed patient and still found ways to score.”

Tray Watkins DL, Chase: 70 total tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 9 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries.

Head coach Daniel Bailey on Watkins: “Tray just played superb all year for us. It’s going to be hard to replace a player like Tray. He did a great job making a name for himself.”

Tyran Hunt LB, Chase: 92 total tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 3 forced fumbles.

Bailey on Hunt: “He was a really big surprise this year. Tyran was never the biggest, fastest or strongest player on the field, but he played incredibly smart. As far as an instinctual middle linebacker who made all the right reads, he’s the best that Chase has had in a long time.”

Josh Wright FB, Chase: 1,030 yards rushing, 4.8 yards per carry, 10 TDs.

Bailey on Wright: “We expected big things from josh but we thought it would be on the defensive side of the ball. He stepped into the fullback role and became our workhorse a year earlier than we expected.”

T.J. Watkins QB, East Rutherford: 1,550 yards passing, 15 TDs. 300 yards rushing, 8 TDs.

Head coach Clint Bland on Watkins: “T.J. was our best athlete and gave us the best chance to win football games. I don’t think he had quite the year he wanted to have but imagine what he could have done if he wasn’t hurt for half of the year.”

Jaman Edgerton RB, East Rutherford: 936 yards rushing, 10.5 yards per carry, 5 TDs.

Bland on Edgerton: “Jaman was our MVP. He played all three phases. He really stepped in this year and shined after only playing special teams his junior year. I knew he was the toughest player on our team at the beginning of the year and I told him the same thing at the end.”

Travis Waldroup-Rodriguez WR, East Rutherford: 21 receptions. 301 yards receiving, 8 TDs.

Bland on Waldroup-Rodriguez: “You love having a big body like Travis on the field. In retrospect we could have called more plays for him but he did a great job of making the most of his chances.”

Jordan Strickland DL, East Rutherford: 82 total tackles, 2 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 2 blocked field goals.

Bland on Strickland: “Strickland is only in his third year playing organized football and is already this good. He’s a big, strong kid that we’ll be relying on a lot next season to do even more.”
