Trojans hold of Mountaineers

Things couldn’t have started much better for the Kings Mountain High football team, which built a two-touchdown lead in the first quarter on Friday night at John Gamble Stadium.

But a 33-point second half by Chase tripped up the Mountaineers’ hopes of earning their first conference victory in a 40-28 Trojan victory.

“They laid it on the line, and that’s all you can ask,” Kings Mountain coach Greg Lloyd said. “It’s a shame we didn’t come out with the win, but I’m proud of the guys.”

Brandon Bell had touchdown runs from 18 and 33 yards out as Kings Mountain (2-8, 0-7 SMAC) built a 14-0 edge through one quarter.

The momentum began to turn on Jordan O’Rourke’s 33-yard touchdown reception from Tyrell Boykins with 2:07 left before the half as Chase (5-4, 2-4) cut it to 14-7.

Then, O’Rourke broke tackles near midfield en route to a 60-yard touchdown reception from Boykins early in the third quarter to tie it.

Tico Crocker gave the Mountaineers the lead back, 21-14, three plays from scrimmage later on a 15-yard touchdown run. But Boykins scoring runs of 8 and 4 yards late in the third and early in the fourth pushed the Trojans up 28-21.

“The triple option is a hard offense to stop, especially when the fullback is going,” Chase coach Daniel Bailey said.

Kings Mountain responded with an 11-play drive capped by a 1-yard Crocker scoring run to tie it 28-all.

Josh Wright, whose runs in the second half propelled Chase’s offense, had a touchdown from 3 yards out with six minutes remaining and another from 9 yards less than two minutes later. Both two-point conversions failed as the Trojans took a 12-point lead.

Kings Mountain responded with an extended drive, but D’Andre Kelly’s interception in the end zone with 40 seconds to play ended the Mountaineers’ comeback hopes.

Chase hosts East Burke next week.
