Walker's PAT lifts Chase to upset win
Sometimes an extra point can make all the difference.
After Jordan O’Rourke scored the game tying touchdown in the third quarter, JV call-up Preston Walker booted the game winning extra point and the defense did the rest as Chase (4-4, 2-4 SMAC) upset the North Gaston (5-3) Wildcats, 14-13, Friday night.
“To have a freshman kicker with ice in his veins like that is huge,” said Chase head coach Daniel Bailey. “It gives us confidence to know that if Omar is out, we can still be solid in the kicking game.”
Walker may have ice in his veins, but it was senior Josh Wright who iced the game with two crucial first downs late in the game to seal the upset. Wright finished the night with 132 yards on 18 carries. Josh Kahlig led North Gaston with 65 yards on 11 carries.
“We saw some things that he (Wright) could take advantage of and we made that adjustment at halftime,” said Bailey. "He ran hard all night long.”
Things started off with a bang for Chase. D’Andre Kelly took a pitch and raced up the near sideline for a 32 yard gain. The Trojans then began to pick up chunks of yards. 10 yard runs by Tyrell Boykins and Jordan O’Rourke put Chase in the red zone. However, a chop block pushed the home team out of field goal range and a failed fourth down forced a turnover.
The Trojan defense responded with a three and out, but the Wildcats recovered a Boykins fumble at the Chase 30. An encroachment penalty on Chase on a fourth and 3 kept the drive going and brought a fast moving quarter to a close.
Raquan Brown scored on the second play of the second quarter to give North Gaston a 7-0 lead.
O’Rourke picked up a first down on the ensuing drive before Kelly had 36-yard gain on a double reverse. But another chop block put Chase behind the sticks once again.
That did not matter to Kelly as he took a pitch from Boykins on the next play, broke a tackle at the five and reached the end zone Preston Walker booted the extra point to tie the game at 7-7.
North Gaston answered that score with one of their own as Josh Kahlig capped the drive with a 7-yard run. The extra point was no good to leave the tally at 13-7 with 2:06 left.
Chase tried to mount a two minute drill and they looked to be successful when Boykins completed a 47-yard pass to O’Rourke at the 2. Kelly reached the end zone on the next play, but the score was nullified . Four plays later the half ended with four incomplete passes and left the halftime score at 13-7.
North Gaston began the second half with a methodical drive to the Chase 19. But the defense held on a fourth and 2 to turn the ball over on downs
Josh Wright then took over. After rushing for a pair of first downs, Wright burst up the middle for a 40-yard run and O’Rourke did the same on the next play for a 23-yard score. Walker kicked the extra point to give Chase a 14-13 lead.
Wildcat quarterback Alex Patton fumbled at midfield and O’Rourke, After a three and out, he pinned North Gaston deep at the 2-yard line. A defensive stop set up the Trojans across midfield to start the final quarter.
First down runs by O’Rourke and Wright put Chase in the red zone but Chase one again turned the ball over on downs. After the teams traded punts, North Gaston took over with 5:09 left.
O’Rourke then came up with a big stop on third down to force a punt. Wright broke a 12-yard run on 3rd down to keep the clock moving. Wright then iced the game with another third down conversion as Chase held on 14-13.
The win moves Chase to 4-4 on the season which also makes the Trojans playoff eligible.
“That was our goal,” said Bailey. “We’re at .500 now and anything can happen.”
