Chase captain, sophomore José Vasquez, scored goals in the 40th and 70th minute to lift the Trojans to a 2-0 win over the Draughn Wildcats in the conference opener for both teams.

“I’m very pleased,” said Chase coach Greg Deshommes. “We are a much better side than last year. We are creating chances but we have trouble scoring. We have two freshmen up top though, and that happens. They will learn to finish and we will get even better.”

Chase (2-2, 1-0 SMAC) controlled the run of play early as they peppered the opposing goal with shots.

Devin Davis hit Jorge Mendoza with a long pass who in turn found Preston Walker who curled a shot inside the far post. The tally was wiped off due to an offsides call.

That did not deter the Trojans, as the rest of the half followed a similar pattern.

Shot after shot looked bound for the back of the net only to be knocked away by the Wildcat goalie. Their persistence finally paid off in the 40th minute, just seconds before the halftime whistle. Walker lofted a beautiful long ball down the near sideline. Vasquez ran on the ball and cut around a defender in the corner of the box. He took one dribble to create space and buried a shot in to give Chase a 1-0 lead at the break.

The home team continued to create chances in the second half with crisp passes in the midfield and speed up front.

But the Trojans showed their youth up front as shots went high or just high.

On the defensive side, Chase goalie Ansoni Jimenez was rarely tested, but when he was he was up to the challenge.

After a leaping save, Jimenez delivered a strong throw to the feet of Lassanna Fofana who chipped the ball Vasquez over the top. He raced to the top of the box and ripped a shot in the near corner for a 2-0 Chase lead in the 70th minute.

Off the restart, Vasquez stole the ball and was tripped from behind in the penalty area.

Omar Jimenez took the ensuing penalty kick, but it ricocheted off the crossbar. He sent home the rebound but was whistled for offsides.

Chase returns to action Wednesday as they travel to face Crest.
