Trojans outlast Newton Conover in shootout

The Chase Trojans started the 2013 season with a dramatic win on the road as they scored the final 18 points of the game in a 38-34 win against the Newton Conover Red Devils Friday night.

The Red Devils broke a 20-all halftime tie with a 41-yard TD run by Nick Baker (11 carries for 130 yards), and they pushed their lead to 34-20 with 38.6 seconds left in the third quarter on a 14yard TD run by Blake Roberts (nine carries for 57 yards) and a two-point conversion run by Tyrell Fleming.

Chase then drove 66 yards on nine plays to get an 8-yard scoring run by Josh Wright, closing the gap to eight points.

The Trojans forced a Newton-Conover punt next, with Jordan O’Rourke taking it 77 yards for a TD with 5:09 to play. Chase tried a conversion pass, hoping to tie, but it failed.

The game then made a dramatic turn when Red Devils quarterback Thomas Corpening, who had 50 of Newton-Conover’s 325 rushing yards, fumbled at the Red Devils 3 after a hit by Chase’s Chandler Casner.

With a first-and-goal, Chase scored the go-ahead TD with 2:58 left when D’Andre Kelly went 4 yards with a pitch left. A conversion run failed, but the Trojans, with two scores in less than two minutes, went up 38-34.

On the next possession, Corpening fumbled again – at the Red Devils’ 44 – and Chase’s Darius Dowden recovered. That allowed the Trojans to then eat about 95 seconds off the clock before punting.

The Red Devils’ Gabe Davis partially blocked the punt, which ended up going for minus-4 yards, and Newton-Conover had the ball with 50.9 seconds to play.

Four plays later, after backup quarterback Cameron Stanley missed on a crossing pattern, Chase had the ball on downs and then ate up the final seconds.

Wright led the Trojans with 92 rushing yards and two touchdowns while Kelly ran for 69 yards and two scores.

Chase returns to action Sept. 6 when they welcome Bandys to Rutherford County.
