Seniors lead Chase to win
The four seniors on the Chase baseball roster want to erase the memories of last year's 2-19 season. They took a big step in that direction Friday, defeating North Henderson, 8-5, at home.
Aaron Ballinger, Caleb Lancaster, Josh Epley and Robbie Evans each had at least one run scored in the win while Ballinger picked up the win on the mound, striking out 10 batters in the process.
"Our seniors came up big tonight," said Chase head coach Tony Wall, who picked up his first win as the Trojans head coach. "Aaron did a great job settling down after a tough first inning and the offense got behind him. He is our spark plug but I don't want to forget about the other guys like Josh, Caleb and Robbie that came up with some big hits too. It was a special night."
After Chase (1-1) fell in a 3-0 in the top of the first, they got a run back in the bottom half. Evans singled up the middle, Epley was hit by pitch and Lancaster dropped an RBI single over shortstop to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Ballinger settled down over the next two frames, striking out four over that stretch. Chase took advantage in the third. Ballinger drew a one out walk and stole second. One out later, Evans singled him home. Epley followed with a single and Lancaster gave the Trojans their first lead, 4-3.
Chase added to their lead in their next at bat. Matthew Hemmelgarn and Geoffrey Rollins reached on a hit and an error respectively. Ballinger walked to load the bases before Hunter Henson drove in two runs with a single. Epley drove in the third run of the inning with a single to left to put the home team up 7-3.
Chase added an insurance run in the fifth as Rollins singled home pinch hitter Dylan Lewis as Chase led 8-4.
Ballinger ran into trouble in the sixth giving up a run before he was replaced by Kevin Hopps. He promptly recorded a strikeout to leave the bases loaded and the 8-4 lead in tact.
Hopps ran into trouble in the final inning, however, as he allowed one run to score and then brought the tying run to the plate. He settled down though and induced a fly out to right field to put the finishing touches on the 8-5 victory.
Chase returns to the diamond Tuesday as the as they host Burns to open conference play. First pitch is set for 7pm.
