State wrestling tourney starts Thursday

It all comes down to this. Seven wrestlers from Rutherford County will take the mats this afternoon in hopes of winning a 2A individual state championship.

R-S Central will be represented by Austin Neal (106 pounds), Caleb Cox (120), Ramon Rodriguez (182), Kaleb Hines (220) and Hunter Hunter Edwards (285).

Neal finished the season with a 40-9 record capturing the No. 1 seed out of the western region. He will open up the tournament against the No. 4 seed out of the Mideast, Otto Wolin (28-17) from Carrboro High School.

Cox grabbed the No. 2 seed out of the West and boasts an impressive 44-6 record on the year. Cox’s first challenge will be Bartlett Yancey’s Ryan Chilton (39-11)

Rodriguez, a freshman, slid into the tournament by capturing the No. 4 seed out of the West with a 37-20 record. He faces a tough opening match today when he meets the Midwest’s top seed, Salisbury’s Jeffrey Burton (34-8)

Hines faltered in the regional tournament capturing the No. 3 seed out of the West after winning a second-straight conference title. Coming into the state tournament at 47-5, Hines will face the No. 2 seed out of the Mideast, William Pressley (35-9) of Bartlett Yancey, in Round 1.

Edwards missed the conference tournament due to injury but rebounded by earning the No. 2 seed out of the West in the heavyweight division. Edwards takes his 39-7 record into the first round against the Mideast No.3 seed, Terrance Reed (29-11) of Graham High School.

Chase’s Sammy Peticos (113 pounds) is making his first trip to the tournament after setting a Chase record for wins as a freshman with a 32-8 record.

After earning the No. 2 seed out of the West, Peticos will face the East No. 3 seed, John Bandavanis (26-17) from Southwest Onslow in Round 1.

Nathan Daisley is making a return trip to the tournament for East Rutherford in the 152-pound weight division after grabbing the No. 4 seed out of the West. Daisley finshed the season with a 28-7 record and will face the top seed from the East, Brody McGrath (51-3) of Croatan High School in the first round.

Weigh-ins for 2A wrestlers are set for 3:30 p.m. today on Thursday with the first round matches slated for 5:30 p.m.
