Letter to the Editor: Losing face
Excellent reporting ("Decision" July 3) on the decision by the airport authority.
However, I believe there is another aspect to the problem, a systemic one involving governmental culture. That is, management without any real personal or fiscal responsibility, considering that federal money is free money when instead it should be viewed with the same fiduciary responsibility for assets of the citizenry as if it were the manager's own funds.
This gives rise to a "use it or lose it" mentality that encourages mismanagement. The federal government "gave" the airport authority $611,000 for the purchase of land.
It seems that, having no purchases in mind, the windfall of 10 non-abutting acreage was just too much. And spend a bunch, too - lest it be withdrawn and less made available later, with the airport authority losing face and looking like they don't know their business.
Which is exactly what it looks like now.
