Cheers and Jeers
Cheers ... to Forest City for joining with Spindale, Rutherfordton, Lake Lure and the county to jointly fund the sewer study. An efficient areawide wastewater collection and treatment system with ample capacity protects the public health and environment and facilitates economic development.
Cheers ... to Chimney Rock State Park staff for completing the renovations that make the park one of the premier attractions in the Southeast.
Cheers ... to Julie Scherer, Finance Officer for Forest City for refinancing debt in Forest City that will save the taxpayers a bundle.
Jeers ... to CNN for reinstating the rolling news banner at the bottom of the screen. This adds little to the newscast other than dizziness and blurry eyes on the part of viewers.
Jeers ... to the US Senate for not passing any significant legislation in 952 days. Pundits call this paralysis. Everyone else calls it ridiculous.
Cheers ... to the Rutherford County middle schools that brought home top honors in the recent Junior Beta Club state convention. The students had to work hard on various skits and presentations. It is great that their hard work paid off.
Cheers ... to a new fundraising initiative by Community in Schools of Rutherford County (CISRC). The program, which began last week includes putting pink flamingos as lawn ornaments in unsuspecting yards in the county. For $10 you can have a yard decorated or get yourself out of getting decorated.
Cheers ... to our county high school basketball teams for their performance in last week's South Mountain Athletic Conference tournaments. Regardless of whether or not your team made it to the championship, their play was competitive and the sportsmanship exhibited was commendable.
Jeers ... to the continued reports of phone or in-person scams that prey on unsuspecting residents of Rutherford County. We hope, in the event you are named a sweepstakes winner or asked for personal information, you do your homework and make sure you know what you may be getting into.
Cheers ... to Rutherford County high school band members who participated in special ensembles around the area. Music is a great part of our society and it is great that these high school students are taking that part seriously.
Side note ... we could jeer the spike in high gas prices but we have all been hurt by the increase. We only hope there is some relief in sight.
