Cheers and Jeers

Nov. 17, 2012 @ 05:11 AM

Cheers ... to the "Farming and Social Media" event in Rutherford County on Thursday. It is great to see two spectrums come together to try to work for the betterment of the community.

Jeers ... to Judge Fred Morrison for siding with PETA and ruling Brasstown's annual New Years Eve "Possum Drop" illegal. In his ruling Judge Morrison stated that possums should be afforded the same choice as Patrick Henry ... give me liberty or give me death!

Cheers ... to the awarding of $1.3 million to replace a bridge over the CSX railroad on Cherry Mountain Street near Bostic. We have several bridges in the county that are in need of repair and this is a good way to start.

Cheers ... to tonight's annual Ellenboro Bluegrass Convention. It is a great combination of barbeque and bluegrass music that will fill the halls of Ellenboro Elementary and we encourage citizens to stop by and take part in the event.

Jeers ... to the number of illegal business signs that are located on the roadways in Rutherford County. We agree with SWEEP that these are an eyesore and need to be disposed of in a proper fashion.

These go in a string ...

Jeers ... to the UNC officials who let $123,000 of box office receipts from arts programs to simply go missing.

Jeers ... also to the UNC Public Safety Department for being unable to identify a suspect and ...

Jeers ... to the Orange-Chatham District Attorney's Office for dropping the case. A serious crime has been committed at a major public institution involving a significant amount of public funds. The officials responsible for allowing the crime to occur must be held accountable and the individuals who committed the crime must be identified, apprehended and prosecuted. This is yet another black eye for the state's flagship public university.

From a reader ...

Cheers ... to all the people who supported and all the people who came out to "A Salute to Rutherford County Veterans" on Saturday, November 10th. And especially, cheers to our Veterans!
