Cheers and Jeers

Cheers … to Rutherford County for earning three National Association of Counties Achievement Awards for innovative county government programs. Creative thinking by county employees is what makes Rutherford County government work.

Jeers … to local merchants who sell alcohol to minors. When in doubt, card them.

Cheers … to Carolina Health Care System for the Urgent Care Center that opened in Forest City providing after hours and weekend care to treat minor injuries and illnesses. The center will provide county residents a convenient alternative to the hospital emergency room for treatment of minor mishaps and illnesses and will free-up resources in the emergency room to treat life threatening illnesses and trauma.

Jeers … to state legislators who continue to try to find ways to funnel taxpayer money to fund religious and private schools. The money would be much better spent supporting public education as required by the state constitution and paying teachers decent salaries.

Cheers … to N.C. House members to voted for requiring mopeds be registered, tagged and titled. The measure passed the House Friday and, while we aren’t supportive of mopeds and uninsured drivers on our roadways, this is a good first step to regulating them.

Cheers … to those selected to The Daily Courier All-Academic team as well as All-County baseball and softball. You have worked hard on and off the field and deserve congratulations.

Cheers … to Bob Hensley, of Spindale, who will retire from the Department of Social Services after nearly 44 years. We appreciate your service in the betterment of those around you.

Cheers … to all the people who took part in Operation Blood Drive in Forest City Thursday for a record-breaking blood collection of 897 pints at Forest City Fire Rescue. Your efforts will go to saving the life of another and we appreciate your contribution.

From readers …

Jeers … to Julius Owens and Bob Howard for creating the fiasco that the county is in now. Since about $130,000 has to be paid back, I think Julius Owens and Bob Howard should pay it back.
