Cheers and Jeers

Feb. 02, 2013 @ 06:03 AM

Cheers ... to the Symphony of Rutherford County and it’s interim Conductor, Matthew Guffey, for bringing wonderful (and free) concerts to this area for 25 years.

Cheers ... to Jerry Stensland and the Rutherford Outdoor Coalition for all their work on trails, bicycle tours, river access, other recreation opportunities for county residents and visitors.

Cheers ... to the Timken Foundation for awarding a $3,000 grant to Communities in Schools of Rutherford County to hold a career day for middle school students.

Cheers ... to Gardner-Webb University for entering a team in the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Ethics Bowl. Increasing awareness of the importance of applying ethics to decision making and interpersonal relationships is a vital component of preparing students to become future business and government leaders.

Cheers ... to Manroy Defense Systems for their decision to invest $600,000 to expand their Spindale plant and to add 53 new jobs.

Jeers ... to the General Assembly for working only 30 minutes on the first day of the 2013 session. That falls way short of the public’s expectation of a day’s work for a day’s pay. There is much work to be done.

Cheers ... to all the children that appreciate and respect the sacrifices that their parents or guardians have made possible for them.

Cheers ... to all the children that still call or take care of their parents; regardless of how busy their lives may become.

Cheers ... to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department & the United Way’s CET for the joint effort of keeping deadly prescription drugs out of the hands of the wrong people!

Cheers ... to tax preparers during this tax season that will help people receive a good tax refund or at least break even by helping to boost our economy.
