Sharing ideas a solid proposal

Recently, it was reported that representatives of the Rutherford County Airport Authority, Economic Development Commission (EDC) and Tourism Development Authority (TDA) met for an information session.

The intent was to discuss how to make the Rutherford County Airport a marketable tool in the county.

Included in the meeting was officials with the Town of Lake Lure and Rumbling Bald Golf Course.

We find it encouraging that all of these groups came together for the intent of collaboration.

Through these collaboration and coordination efforts the county should realize a greater bang for its marketing buck.

And it should be said that the Rutherford County Airport can, and should, be a strong marketing tool to be used in the tool box of such individuals as EDC Director Matt Blackwell.

Having a strong county airport can be a strong asset in the efforts of recruiting business to Rutherford County.

What needs to be put in perspective is that the Rutherford County Airport is one of many recruiting tools at the disposal of our economic development minds. But, it is the airport that may have been the most overlooked.

In the past, the Rutherford County Airport has not been competitive in the market of fuel sales, making it less competitive in the region and less likely to have aircraft stop over.

Now, under the direction of the Airport Authority, the Rutherford County Airport has become more viable and the choice to reduce the price of fuel has moved it to be one of the most competitive small airports in the Southeast.

A grand location, great surroundings and competitive fuel prices are certainly tools that should be at the disposal of marketing Rutherford County.

With these groups starting to collaborate, it might be worth taking that a step further and encouraging these groups to, not only continue with these communication efforts but also look at cross-appointment of members to the other boards. This could create an interlocking directorate.

It would also further facilitate coordination and sharing of ideas and would lead to marketing programs that speak in unison for Rutherford County.
