Cheers and Jeers
Cheers … to Gene Volk and the volunteers from the North Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and volunteers from Forest City for repairing the Forest City town clock. Henceforth no one in Forest City has an excuse for being late for anything.
Jeers … to drivers who fail to stop as required by state law when they encounter a school bus stopped to pick up or discharge students.
Jeers … to the N.C. Senate budget proposal that would take 15,000 disabled and elderly people off the Medicaid rolls forcing adult care facilities to discharge residents into the street whose benefits are cut. That is a sorry way to treat needy seniors.
Cheers … to the East Rutherford High School softball team for their participation in the 2A state tournament over the weekend in Raleigh. You should be proud of your accomplishments because we certainly are.
Cheers … to Justin Kuhel for his efforts to walk across the country to raise funds for veterans. Kuhel walked through Rutherford County this week and his endeavor should be an inspiration for all of us.
Cheers … to the 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa for hosting Kuhel and his mother Nancy while in Rutherford County.
Jeers … to the retirement of Greg Lovelace as principal at Chase High School. Of course our jeers is in jest because we wish him the best in his future but we certainly hate to lose such a dedicated educator. In all fairness, we want to congratulate Lovelace and thank him for his years of service to Rutherford County Schools.
Cheers … to the news that Shay Birchfield, 14, will be attending the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The trip, made possible by the Make-A-Wish Foundation should be a great experience for Birchfield — who has been battling cancer.
From readers …
Jeers … to whomever decided to deactivate the siren at the Sandy Mush Fire Department. It there was a legitimate reason, it should be made known. There have been many complaints about it being turned off.
