I just want to get a new laptop
I will be the first admit that it takes me slightly south of forever to make a big purchase.
It really doesn’t matter what it is. It can be a car, house ... just about anything.
Recently, the time was upon me to purchase a new laptop for work and for school. The process started short of about four months ago and I am glad to report that this past weekend, I pulled the trigger.
That’s right, just shy of 120 days after I decided I needed to, I decided to make the purchase.
In all fairness, it would have been a lot longer had a squirrel not found its way to our power lines and effectively put my current mode for technology out of commission.
But, my reasoning for taking so long to finally pull out the card or write the check is I like to do my due diligence before I spend a lot of money on something.
Six months for a car ... twice ... and now, four months for a laptop.
You wouldn’t think it would take that long considering what I use my laptop for.
It can range from classwork to taking notes at a meeting and most things in-between.
So, finding what I need and what I want should be a simple process, yes?
Well, not exactly.
I considered everything from software to work compatibility. Can I still use my iPhone and iPad with it? Will it do everything that I need it to do?
Granted, I’m not designing high-end computer graphics or making full-scale movies with my laptop but I want to make sure I am getting what I want and that it will do what I need it to do when I need it.
Over the last few months Amanda made fun of me for not pulling the trigger and she made some really good points.
“You know you need it and we’re here already so just get it.”
“You’re going to have to get it eventually, so just get it now.”
“There is really no need to wait. You know what they all do and you know what you need.”
All very valid but I’m just not wired to decide that way.
I have to mull, stew and pace back and forth until there is something in the back of my mind that just triggers the fact that it is time.
I really can’t explain what that trigger is because it is different for everything.
What is funny is that I have very little problem with the impulse buy. Getting a shirt or socks or grocery item that I may, or may not, need is something that requires very little hesitation on my part.
But, with something sizable — namely in price — there I am, standing there looking dumbfounded and asking the same questions over and over of the poor salesperson who might have woke up that morning not prepared to deal with my obsessive compulsive disorder.
This time around, the salesman was patient and put up with my repeated interrogation regarding processing speed, memory size and software compatibility.
In the end, I guess, for me my process works. It’s just my own little nuance that may or may not be an endearing quality.
But, the bottom line is that it is my quality and I’ll stick with it.
