Bill was born May 20, 1926, and spent his childhood in Greenwich, Connecticut. In 1944, at the age of 18, he joined the army and served in the Pacific Theater.  He went to school on the GI bill, earning his undergraduate degree from Brown University and his PhD in psychology from the University of Rochester.

He then worked at the Universities of Wisconsin and Nebraska, and the Ohio State University. After he retired in 1986, Bill and Jan moved to Lake Lure, where he served many years on the town council and planning and zoning committee. He and Jan also volunteered for several years for the local Chamber of Commerce, and they could be found every Friday morning behind the counter at the town library.
